The Cinema Madrid was a screening room located in the Tijuca neighborhood, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated on April 26, 1954, Cinema Madrid (also known as Cine Madrid) was one of the many street screening rooms in Tijuca.
The screening room had a capacity of 1,827 people and is famously known for being near Divino Bar, a popular meeting spot for renowned musicians such as Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos, Tim Maia and Jorge Ben Jor. The bar is also recognized for being the birthplace of the Jovem Guarda, a rock n' roll-influenced musical movement from the 1960s.
Cinema Madrid's last day of operation was May 17, 1970, when a fire consumed the screening room at late night, leading to renovation works that ultimately resulted in the cinema never reopening again.
Severely deteriorated nowadays, a small sign from Rio's Cultural Heritage Institute is the indication of what the building once was.
