Cinema Roxy

Updated: Nov 4, 2024

The Cinema Roxy (also known as Cine Roxy) is a cinema located in the Copabacana neighborhood of the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Designed by architect Rafael Galvão in an Art Deco style, Cine Roxy was inaugurated on September 3, 1938.

With its remarkable red sign spelling "Roxy" and a luxurious marble stairway at the entrance, Cine Roxy originally had a single screening room with a capacity of 1,630 people originally, making it the largest cinema in Brazil for a significant period of time. Struggling financially, the cinema underwent major renovation works in 1991, reopening that same year with three smaller screening rooms (Roxy 1, 2 and 3).

Cinema Roxy closed temporarily in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened in October, but, facing major significant problems, closed permanently in 2022.

Sold for 30 million reais, Roxy recently underwent a major renovation to become an event venue, and it was renamed "Roxy Dinner Show." An investment of over 60 million reais was made to be allocated for its maintenance, as well as for booking artists and promoting events. Its façade, considered a historic landmark by the Rio de Janeiro's Cultural Heritage Institute, was fully preserved. The reopening occurred on October 10, 2024.
